The Reconstructionists

I love this new collaboration by two people I deeply admire: Maria Popova, the author of Brain Pickings, and Lisa Congdon, a wonderful artist and illustrator.  This project, "The Reconstructionists", is a yearlong celebration of remarkable women -beloved artists, writers, and scientists, as well as notable unsung heroes- who have changed the way we define ourselves as a culture and live our lives as individuals of any gender.

This project will be updated every Monday, check it out here:  The Reconstructionists.

Every day is the best day

"Write it in your heart that every day is the best day in the year."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Another favorite quote, from Emerson; I like waking up with this attitude. When you expect good thing to happen, good things happen, indeed!

Do you have a favorite quote? I love inspirational quotes, I love referring to them when I'm feeling down or discouraged. More of my favorite quotes here:

We will always have Paris

This would be perfect for a Casablanca fan, like my mom. (I lost count of how many times we've watched the movie, but let me tell you that we know the dialogue by heart). I'd love for this quote to be available as a print so I could frame it and give it to her.

Piece of advice

I recently came across this wonderful post by The Angry Therapist, and I thought is a must read for everyone out there.

What’s the one piece of advice you wish you’d been given in your mid-twenties?

  • Don’t worry about where or who you’re going to be in five years. Like high school, you’re going to look back and wish you had done so many things differently.
  • Know that and do them differently now.
  • Focus on what’s in front on you.
  • Work on the relationship you have with yourself first.
  • Slow down.
  • Enjoy today.
  • It’s okay to not know.
  • Eat alone in restaurants.
  • Stop trying to prove something.
  • Seek growth instead of validation.
  • Shatter your veneer.
  • Be heard.
  • Draw boundaries.
  • Pull from your Solid Self as much as you can.
  • Sweat.
  • Process (get therapy).
  • Travel.
  • Don’t compartmentalize people.
  • Love fearlessly, even though you’ve been crushed before.
  • Practice gratitude.
  • Eat clean.
  • Toss your scale.
  • Pull yourself out of the victim position.
  • Exercise your forgiveness muscle (you will need this).
  • Don’t be concerned with what others think of you.
  • Step out of line and jump into life, yours.
  • Accept your story.
  • Don’t chase paper.
  • Seek truth.
  • Be patient.

Never give up on a dream

"Never give up on a dream just because of the time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway."
A excellent quote from one of my favorite motivational authors: Earl Nightingale.

*UPDATE: Now you can buy this quote as a print in my shop!

Zen Pencils

Have you heard about Zen Pencils? It's a website run by Gavin Aung Than where inspirational quotes are adapted into cartoons. The quote above by the Dalai Lama is one of my favorites.
You can buy prints here.
Make sure to read all of the quotes, they're all great!

Movie Quotes

"A boy's best friend is his mother."

Norman Bates

Psycho is my favorite movie ever, and being the classic that it is, I wasn't surprised to see this famous quote in the American Film Institute's 100 Quotes List. Also, see the Top 10 Movies List, there are so many movies I haven't seen yet!

More James Dean, please

James Dean only appeared in 3 movies, and after watching them all , I think it's safe to say that I'm totally in love with him! He was so talented and incredibly handsome.
I found some interesting footage of him, like his last interview. Ironically, he gives advice to young drivers saying: "Take it easy driving, the life you might save might be mine." James was only 24 years old when he died in a car accident.
If you want to see more James Dean, I recommend this tumblr dedicated to him, his official website, and his bio.

"Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today."

Another quote

Meditation, 2008, acrylic on canvas

When my daughter was about seven years old, she asked me one day what I did at work. I told her I worked at the college - that my job was to teach people how to draw. She stared at me, incredulous, and said, "You mean they forget?"

-Howard Ikemoto

Have a great weekend!

Quote by Picasso

Picasso was in a park when a woman approached him and asked him to draw a portrait of her. Picasso agreed and quickly sketches her. After handing the sketch to her, she is pleased with the likeness and asks how much she owed to him. Picasso replies: "$5,000."
The woman screamed, "but it took you only five minutes."
"No, madam, it took me all my life," replied Picasso.

Yes, it takes time to be awesome.

Believe in the magic...

Today, walking around my neighborhood, I found something that intrigued me. At first, it seemed like a regular house. However, there was something about the house that make me look. It's hard to explain, but this house seemed like it came out from a fairy tale.

There was something written next to the ring bell, and the first thing that caught my eye, was the colors. I came closer to read the inscription and found this amazing quote:
What a great quote! And what a great idea to have something beautiful to look at when you leave your house! I'm totally doing the same! Do you have a favorite inspirational quote?
