Governors Island

Last Saturday, my mom and I took the ferry for a mother & daughter bike ride in Governors Island.
We had a blast!

Free ferry rides depart from South St. in downtown Manhattan. Like you can see above, we weren't the only ones who had the idea of taking our bikes!

The ferry ride only lasts about 5 minutes, but you get to admire stunning views of the financial district and the Brooklyn Bridge.

The passengers of this boat seemed to enjoyed the weather, how could you not? The temperature was in the 70's and it was sunny and breezy.

I didn't know that Governors Island was once a military post where high ranking officials and other military personnel lived with their families.(A fun fact, NASA astronaut Michael Collins lived here for a period of his childhood!)
So the houses where they lived are now...abandoned. Doesn't that sound mysterious and a little scary? I had fun peeking through the windows and imagine who lived there, what kind of furniture they had, and what kind of daily routine they follow.
Some houses are open to the public and are used for art exhibits like this one with a crazy butterfly installation on the fireplace. (above)

I found it fascinating to went into the houses and imagine how these people used to live.

The Admiral's House was pretty neat, too.

A peek into the living room, must've been wonderful to live there!

What a fun day we had! I highly recommend spending a day here, whether you live in NY or are here for vacation. Check out the Island's website for more info, and also, see their plans for a whole new redesign of the Island.
